Sarah Turner Cottle Chapter

of the Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT)

In 1929, the DRT began the Children of the Republic of Texas in order to assemble men and women under the age of 21, who also descend from early Texas pioneers.

The SFA chapter is proud to sponsor the Sarah Turner Cottle Chapter of the Children of the Republic of Texas.

Sarah Turner Cottle was born in 1786 in Pembroke, Plymouth County, Mass. She was married 10 June 1808 in Upper Cuivre, St. Charles District, Missouri Territory to Stephen Cottle. She died 1843 in the Alum Comm., Bastrop County, Republic of Texas.

After her husband, Stephen, died, Sarah was awarded a grant of land in the Bastrop County area as the head of a household in Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony. The land grant is recorded in the name of Sarah Cottle, "Head of Household". According to documents found more recently, the grant was for "A league and a labor" which totaled just over 4,603 acres. In another list, she is shown as receiving 1 league, or 4,428.4 acres. The grant date is April 5, 1831. The Cottle Cemetery (defunct), where Sarah and several children and grandchildren are buried, was located on the Sarah Cottle League in Alum Creek and has been destroyed.
Both Stephen and Sarah are listed in the "Old 300" list of early Texas settlers.
